It is a photocell it detects light not dissimilar to how a solar plate works when there is light it makes voltage when there is no light no voltage

My car has daytime running lights. Sensor is on the dashboard at the upper left corner near windshield.
To turn off lights I have to pull on the e-brake before starting the car. It then stays off until I turn the car off and on again.

Photo sensitive electronics. Think like the tech that is used for solar power. It’s just an electronic switch that can tell how much light it is absorbing.

There’s a switch that gets turned on when sunlight stops touching it, or when you turn on your windshield wipers there’s a switch that turns on the lights as well
