[ELI5] How does a DVD player play DVDs back in 1080p if DVDs can only store 480i/480p resolution?

The DVD standard has maximum 480p or 576p (depending on framerate).

But DVD players can support various other video formats too. This is extra feature that may not be available on all players. Sometimes there are bunch of logos on the front of the player to advertise all the extra formats that player can play.

You can put whatever mp4 file on a DVD and insert that into the DVD player. It may play it or it may not play it depending on what formats it supports.
