Eli5: How does audio work for animatronics on amusement rides?

Take for instance a ride at Disney, when you are going through a ride, how can you hear the audio at the perfect time? How come the people in front or behind you are hearing a different thing but are located around the same spot as you?

Well if you check out Pirates of the Caribbean, the audio is on a loop. there’s a lot of audio you don’t hear if you’re not in the right location at the right time. There’s a video of the original ride from 1967, and they set the audio so it’s all playing at the right time in the video, and you realize that when you actually go on the ride, there’s a lot you don’t hear because you’re not in the exact right place at the right time: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3RhTzaribE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3RhTzaribE)

If you look at their newest ride, Rise of the Resistance, they tell a whole story and it’s like being inside a movie as it’s happening. They’ve timed everything so people are in a specific location at a specific time and the audio is synced with the path you take. They’ve done that by separating the ride in to sections to sync things up.

I know when you ride the Haunted Mansion, there are speakers embedded in every ride vehicle, so you are getting a specific feed of the audio directed at you. I’m not sure about other rides, specifically, but that’s one of the ways they do it.
