Eli5 How does car detailing work?

Every time I see car detailing videos I always see the people get the electronics wet with soap and I assume water? Or there is some spray. How does that work? Is there a reason the dashboard and car screen work fine after a detail?

I maintain my vehicles inside and out regularly. With that said, I recently bought a beautiful SUV (2009) but the previous owner had kids and didn’t give two shits about keeping the interior clean. I’m talking french fries, juice box straws, spilled juice, milk, gum stuck in the carpet, lollipops, dirt, sticky soda cupholders with integral coin currency.. I paid $125 to have the interior detailed and that’s money well spent. Someone who details automobiles for a living knows all the tricks, has the tools, time and solvents to transform interior from “eww, fuck that” into “is this the same car?” in 3 hours. When I 1st saw the pictures of the truck I knew it was going to be a mess when I arrived and it was. Look beyond the surface; no cracks or cuts in the leather seats or carpet, the dash and headliner intact. A detail is only worth what the detailer offers/delivers. Decide from there. They’re not magicians, if the interior/exterior is trashed, they’ll do their best to make the trash look/smell better. IMHO, it’s absolutely worth it to get the vehicle back to “as good as it can be” baseline, keep it that way moving forward.
