General anaesthetics are primarily administered via inhalation or IV. Both these routes involve rapid diffusion of the drug into the CNS and brain where they cause increases in inhibitory neurotransmitter activity and inhibit excitatory activity. In addition, neuromuscular blockers are frequently used to cause paralysis.
