eli5 How does insurance work in for a multi-car accident?

On the way to dinner and saw an accident with 9 cars. Each car rear-ending the car in front and getting rear-ended from the car behind, except for the first and last car.

How does insurance work in this case? Let’s say I’m car #4, would my insurance pay for the rear-end damage to the car in front of me and my front-end damage? Car #5 insurance would pay for my rear-end damage?

EDIT: For California USA

This depends on your country, state, and the nature of the specific accident.

In some countries, the person at primary fault pays the most. In regions that are so-called “no-fault” locations, insurance just pays out for whatever damage was done to the individuals involved and you all pay higher premiums.

Every country has different insurance rules, and even different states/provinces/territories/whatever within a country may have different insurance rules.

The scenario you’re describing would generally be called a “pileup”, and most likely, each driver would be responsible for their own damages.
