eli5 How does insurance work in for a multi-car accident?

On the way to dinner and saw an accident with 9 cars. Each car rear-ending the car in front and getting rear-ended from the car behind, except for the first and last car.

How does insurance work in this case? Let’s say I’m car #4, would my insurance pay for the rear-end damage to the car in front of me and my front-end damage? Car #5 insurance would pay for my rear-end damage?

EDIT: For California USA

Every country has different insurance rules, and even different states/provinces/territories/whatever within a country may have different insurance rules.

The scenario you’re describing would generally be called a “pileup”, and most likely, each driver would be responsible for their own damages.
