The discharge turns a column of air into plama state…hot as a MoFo.

This causes a big/fast expansion of the it and nearby air.

This creates a powerful air compression wave.

Lighting can produce sound if the light switch is particularily loud or you’re using a tube which requires the electric field to ramp up before triggering the actual light effect. The electrical components doing that ramp up are audibly crackling.
