Eli5: How does mirtazapine slow metabolism and is there a way to counteract this effect?

It’s not clear that mirtazapine does slow metabolism or increase appetite. Why only some people gain weight while taking this med and others don’t isn’t understood. We can’t mitigate that side effect if the underlying cause isn’t understood either.
