Friend of mine owns a small cinema in germany. He gets his films only via harddisc. He also had to switch from old Italien projectors to giant beamers, had to buy additional Servers because obviously, the HD is encrypted and your key is only valid for a certain period of time.
Edit: In fact “Django” was the first mobile, he played digital.
Edit 2: The German state supported all the cinemas in germany to buy new hardware because obviously you can’t use the old one with the new medium. Full of gratitude the distributors like Disney or Universal raised their prices. Before they used to geht less then 50 percent from the ticket price now (before Corona) they want about 54 to 56 percent.

Actual film reels are extremely rare now, as nearly all theaters are pure digital and making and shipping film reels is very expensive. Absolutely no one wants to deal in physical film anymore. All digital.

Theaters get their movies one of two way: 1) it gets shipped to them on a secure hard drive. 2) it gets sent to them over the internet via a very fast fiber connection.

Both. Theaters can be sent large reels of film they load up in their projectors or they can be sent hard drives that are installed in the digital projectors. Depending on the release date and the secrecy of the movie, the theaters may get the media a week before opening date or only a few hours before.
