eli5: How does my UV flashlight have a higher uv index rating than the Sun

901 viewsOtherPhysics

When I measured the sun, it gave a UV index of 6. When I measured the uv flashlight, it gave a uv index of 196. Is the sun not more powerful in UV than the flashlight?

The sun IS more powerful in UV than the flashlight – *at its source*. But it’s so far away that the energy transmitted by the sun is dissipated and/or blocked by all manner of things.

It’s the same way the sun makes your days warm and toasty but a fire can burn you. Or how someone yelling at you from the other side of the house is softer than someone whispering right next to your ear.

Like others have explained so much closer, no atmosphere blocking the sun. And I would think and hope its also the on the weak UV spectrum.. UVA I believe, if it was 196 on UVB that would give you sunburns in seconds if exposed to it, and I’m sure not legal to own, or at least not to sell to the general population

If someone farts far away from you you might catch a whiff of it. If someone farts right on your face you can bet that you’ll be inhaling pure dookie.
