NFC – near field communications – is just an implementation of the RFID – radio frequency identification technology.

The short version is that you have a reader and you have a tag. The tag contains a very small microchip and an antenna.

The reader is constantly emitting a low-power electromagnetic field. When the tag is placed inside this field, it used some of that energy to power up the microchip. The microchip then sends a code out of the antenna, which the reader reads.

The reader then passes this code along to another computer system that does _something_ with it, depending on what the code is. If it is a credit card reader, for example, it will pass on your credit card information for the transaction. If it is an access badge, it will pass along your ID so the security system can decide whether or not to open the door.

Edit: So I love the fact that we have three completely different answers here, all of which are 100% correct explanations of “NFC”

So an employer may terminate your employment at any point for any reason (cause). Being fired for being late, for example, is “for cause”. Being fired because the boss just doesn’t like you or your name was pulled out of a hat would be an example of termination “not for cause”

Football used to be two different leagues, the National Football League and the American Football league. The two leagues merged in 1970 to form the National Football League, consisting of two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Currently, each conference has 16 teams, divided into 4 divisions of 4 teams each. The winner of each division and the next top 2 teams, called Wild Cards, go to single elimination playoffs. The winner of each set of playoffs goes to the Super Bowl. This year, the San Francisco 49ers won the NFC championship and so they are going to the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs who are the winners of the AFC championship.

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a breed of domestic cat. Norse legends refer to the skogkatt as a “mountain-dwelling fairy cat with an ability to climb sheer rock faces that other cats could not manage.” Since the Norwegian Forest cat is a very adept climber, author Claire Bessant believes that the skogkatt folktale could be about the ancestor of the modern Norwegian Forest breed. The name Norse skogkatt is used by some breeders and fancier organisations for the modern breed.

Non-Fecal Coliforms are part of the groups of bacteria species that are typically found in the colon. However, they can also be found in in soil, contaminated water, etc, and don’t necessarily need to come from feces (poop).

Nordic fuzz con (NFC) is a yearly furry convention located in Sweden. Taking place in mid to late February, it’s the third largest European furry conventions. While small vs many American conventions, NFC is a con with many international attendees from outside of Scandinavia. As a nonprofit, they donate to animal related charities in the area such as the odsherred rescue zoo in 2021 and 2023.
