Eli5: How does one “direct” an animated film or TV show?

To me, it sounds like having the storyboards drawn and photographed.

The director of any production (movie, play, animated film, etc.) sets the artistic “feel” of the project. They read the script and are responsible for interpreting the script on behalf of the entire production. In the case of an animated production, the director will advise the voice actors on what the characters they are playing are thinking and therefore how they should project fear, anger, humor, etc. They may even cut a voice actor’s delivery to give guidance like “Say that line again with more force this time. Remember, your character is angry but he’s warning others at the same time so give it more of a shouting alarm feel”.

The director may also work with animators to say for example, “Give the background a little more dark accents. This is a spooky scene and it seems to bright to me.”

So an animation director is really no different than a traditional movie director except they are directing both voice actors and animators.
