We don’t just have pure water in our bodies, it’s a component of liquids like blood which have a lot of other nutrients in it. If you drink a lot of water without eating or drinking anything else, it dilutes those nutrients which isn’t ideal. Pedialyte and things like gatorade are designed to give you those things in addition to water so your body can recover quicker. It’s especially important in babies because their size means it can take a deceptively small amount of water to dilute things to dangerous levels. This is why it’s not recommended to give babies any water at all, only milk/formula, before 6 months old.
