eli5: How does so much lint come off of clothes or bedding, yet they show no sign of degredation?

It’s because lint is a lot less dense than the fabric it comes off of, and also consist of skin flakes, hair, pet fur, and other fibrous material, so it looks like a lot more than it really is. And over a long time, you can gradually see the fabric that the lint comes off of getting more and more thin and worn, but it takes years. With a lot of clothes/sheets contributing to the lint, it’s a lot of tiny amounts being collected in one place (the lint trap of the dryer) so it seems like a lot
