The parliament of India has two houses – the Council of States and the House of People.

Council of States is the upper house, it has 238 seats for elected members and 12 seats for appointed members. The elected members are chosen by the state legislatures, and each state gets a number of seats relative to its population.

The House of People is the lower house. There are 543 members who are all directly elected in first-past-the-post. Basically the country is divided up into 543 districts, and whoever gets the most votes in a district wins that seat. Whichever party wins the most seats forms the government, and that party’s leader becomes the Prime Minister.
