Eli5: how does xöömej work?

I’ve always been amazed by those Mongolian throat singers who sing two notes at the same time. How does it work?

the main tone of your voice comes from your larynx vibrating but other tones are created as air flows through your throat, across your teeth, lips, tongue, etc. you can kind of hear it if you let out a single sustained note and then move your lips like “eeeooooeeeeooo” there’ll be a faint swishy seashell noise

throat singing is about positioning the body, chest, throat, etc. such that the overtone gets loud enough to hear distinctly, and then singing by manipulating that overtone instead of by the larynx’s main tone
