Eli5 how gamma radiation causes film grain/video distortion.

This is partially inspired by Kyle Hill’s new video, but I have been wondering about it for a while.

The high energy particles or waves interact with the image sensor the same as light striking it would do. By creating a detectable charge. As cameras are not designed to focus gamma radiation this is displayed as noise, same as would happen if you removed the lenses from in front of the image sensor and had unfocused light hitting it.
