But there are some definite benefits to having a camera that’s much higher-resolution than the screen on the same device:
* You can zoom and crop the image without losing a lot of clarity.
* “Image stabilization” relies on the camera having a bigger resolution than the video you’re recording. It allows the camera to “correct” the shakiness without adding black bars around the video.
* Very new phones now commonly use a technology called “pixel binning”, which reduces graininess in low-light photos, among other things. Basically, they use a camera with a ridiculously high pixel count like 100 MP to take a picture that’s resized down to an 8 or 12 MP photo that’s cleaner than it would be if it was taken with an 8 or 12 MP camera.
