eli5 how has the planet not run out of oil?

How can there be any oil left at this point? I cannot wrap my head around it — with all of the cars and airplanes, plus all of the plastic that’s also made from oil. How in the world isn’t it all gone by now?

There is lots and lots and lots of it. Venezuela is estimated to have more oil reserves than Saudi Arabia, just lacks the infrastructure and political stability to really exploit it (for the moment). We have even more coal, and are able to convert coal to oil products at a competitive price if needed.

We are in no way close to seeing the end of oil, political pressure will end our extensive use, not availability.

Because the earth has been producing it for millions of years and it’s been less than 100 years since we started using it. Give it a little more time and it will.

Well earth has been here forever so has fossils which makes oil. But eventually we’ll run out and rely on solar energy, which is probably never going to run out.
