eli5: How headphones work

I have opened many headphones and all of them have a thick ring-like magnet, I assume which is what makes the sound. I also figure there is something else with the magnet, seeing as it is incased with some type of plastic and wire around it.

There’s a coil of wire that sits in the magnetic field, when you put electrical current through that coil it turns into an electromagnet, which is attracted to or repelled by the permanent magnet. The coil is attached to a membrane, so that the electrical signal can be turned into vibrations in air by this pushing and pulling.

Speakers work the same way, just bigger.
