Assuming you’re talking about animals, it hasn’t been truly accomplished, yet.
Essentially the idea for most candidate species is to clone them from a living cell we find in the preserved carcass of an animal.
Not sure what you mean “is it the same species”, if successful, the resulting animal would be a clone of a once living member of said species, grown in the womb of a closely related species.
I’ll note that two other approaches exist, back breeding and editing genomes, although these techniques are more dubious and would not produce an exact result.
