How are chemical/hormonal/neutotransmitter-like compounds reproduced for the purpose of creating medications/supplements?

ELI5: Melatonin is a quite a simple compound that can be chemically synthesized from other chemicals in various ways with basic organic chemistry. As for what is the most used (cheapest) process industrially I couldn’t find this information with a quick google.
