Eli5: how is protein food made?

In the last years, a new trend is these lot protein low fats food. We got protein milk, protein yogurt, protein milk, protein snacks, protein shakes, protein cookies, protein mozzarella, protein everything.

How is this protein food made and what does it make different than regular food?

Some of it is marketing. A lot of those foods are *already* high in protein, and companies just take advantage of that as a selling point.

In other cases, the foods are enhanced with something else (like whey protein) to give them a higher protein content than the “normal” version of the food.

The common denominator for nearly all protein products is that they are dairy based.

Milk is essentially a combination of water, fat and protein. Whey protein is the most common form of protein and it’s a byproduct of the cheese making industry which extracts the fat parts of the milk and leaves behind the whey with all the protein in it. You can readily change the protein and fat content of dairy based products, so protein products are simply dairy products with all the fat extracted whilst keeping all the protein
