ELI5–How realistic is the sensor experiment from Twister?

231 viewsOtherTechnology

My husband and I watched Twister for the first time last night, and ignoring the fact that they would have been killed/deafened/blinded many times over, I’m really curious how tornadic study has played out in real life. Have similar experiments been done as the Dorothy project?

The entire story of *Twister* is actually tied to NOAA’s TOTO device, which is essentially the exact same device used as Dorothy is portrayed in the movie. However, TOTO was never really successfully deployed, and was retired in the late ’80s due to how obviously dangerous it was.

Actual tornado probes like TOTO have been deployed, but for the most part they were meant to stay sitting in the ground rather than launch sensors up into the tornado. Reed Timmer did try something along those lines, however.
