Eli5: How scientists can predict how winter season is gonna be? I live in Canada, I still don’t understand how they predict if our winter is gonna be cold or not, Full of snow or not.

Basically – They compare current conditions/trends with decades (if not centuries) of historical data, and make educated assumptions from there. While it’s not 100% predictable, on a large scale weather will follow patterns. So, if they take the current conditions and compare them to what’s happened before they can be fairly confident what will happen now (at a large scale)
