I think I read about it in a Nintendo Power magazine. They has a lot of tips and tricks in those back in the day.
Watch some speed run videos of other games. If the white block blows your mind you will lose it at some of the insane stuff people figure out
Free time, boredom and experimentation. That’s how I discovered lots of secrets in my old NES games as a kid, as I had to spend months or even years with the same games as my mom only could afford one or two games per year.
It was literally featured in the movie The Wizard I’m pretty sure before the game even came out.

Everyone knew bout the white block, we talked about it at recess.
Even without the movie and nintendo power, the white block is completely unique in the level, both in color and the way it casts a shadow. It literally begs you to experiment around it to see why it’s different.
For the record, I found the third warp whistle on my own. By accident. While just messing around
We didn’t have internet back then. We had a magazine that features tips. But collectively we all thought to blow into the game cartridge….
I’ve always assumed the developers placed these shortcuts in their games in order to access certain content quickly
Same thing with the code in Contra to give you 99 lives….
Either from The Wizard, which was basically a Nintendo commercial that ended with the Super Mario bros 3 reveal or Nintendo Power which always had hidden tricks, maps, etc for pretty every big Nintendo game back in the day. Then it was just word of mouth for kids who didn’t get Nintendo Power.
Word of mouth is how I found out about JUSTIN BAILEY.
Now people scour every inch of every level of just about every game (or the actual game code sometimes) looking for Easter eggs, hidden tricks, exploitable glitches, etc.
I remember it being in some Nintendo thing I had – whether it was the game manual or Nintendo Power magazine.
Also remember it being in The Wizard.
