Your body is like a big biological machine. It produces a bunch of chemicals that are part of how its different parts communicate with each other.
Muscles take damage when you use them a lot, and sleep helps repair them. Other things that aren’t muscles like your brain generate a lot of waste products when they’re working hard. Your body can repair muscles and clean up waste while you’re awake, but it’s much better at doing those things when you’re sleeping because the muscles are relaxed and so are the organs.
So when muscles and organs are working hard, they start generating some chemicals that make you sleepy. Your brain and other systems can recognize when these chemicals are getting abundant and respond in ways that make you “feel tired”. If you listen and go to sleep for long enough, the chemicals stop being produced and the waste stuff can get cleaned up.
But if you don’t sleep long enough, not enough waste gets cleaned up. So when you wake up, the muscles are still a little damaged and your organs still have a bit too much of the waste products around. So they *immediately* start making the sleepy chemicals again. That makes you feel sleepy faster, or maybe even right away.
Think about it like how if you just start throwing all your garbage on the floor instead of cleaning up, eventually there’s so much garbage you can’t do anything anymore. Sometimes you’re really busy and don’t have time to clean. But you always end up having to make some time or else you end up having trouble.
It’s your body noticing that it’s not in optimal condition and trying to get you to sleep enough to maintain it!
