Eli5 if disease’s want to live in a host’s body without being discovered, then why do they have such nasty symptoms that can be used to easily identify and destroy them?

Symptoms are what help it spread. Coughing, sneezing and snot are all great transmitters. For most of history, there was no medicine to fight back against disease, only the immune system. So to defeat that, the best route is to spread to as many hosts as possible. Also, many symptoms such as fever, are just our immune systems reaction to fighting the virus.
