[ELI5] If smartphones can be used for long range communication, then why can’t it be used to communicate like walkie-talkies?

Your phone has a puny antenna with not much power and its inconveniently placed low to the ground, but that’s fine because antenna at the mast is large, high up and has plenty of oomph. Together they provide plenty of communication range.
But if you want to connect two phones directly… Well you got two puny antennas, it only works if they are very close like with bt or wifi. It just doesn’t work so well. Better to connect through network.
You mean kinda like a phone??
My old construction management company gave us all Nextels with the PTT. Great for on-site communications
