Some waves are driven by the wind, which can vary across the Channel.

Additionally, the English Channel experiences tidal currents, which means there’s a net flow of water eastwards or westwards depending on whether the tide is rising or falling. That flow of water will also generate waves, as the flowing water will push up against the shore not just vertically, but also “laterally”, along the shoreline.
