Eli5 if two diamonds touch which one will scratch the other?

Diamonds aren’t equally hard in all directions. To oversimplify it a bit, their “points” are harder than their “faces”, so the point on one will scratch the face of another. This is why you can use diamond grit to cut and polish diamonds.
Disclaimer: I was an inorganic chem grad student, but crystallography nearly did me in. Cut me some slack if I don’t have this quite right.
