Eli5: In American schools, the letter grading scheme is: A,B,C,D and F. Why did it skip the letter E?

I was wondering why the letter grading scheme is like this. Why did it skip the letter E?

I’m guessing E represents a % that is still so low that it equates to failure.

Like in my country we get a score of 1 – 100, if you score below 40, that’s a fail.

On an A B C D E F scale, an E would be similar to scoring 30, so still a fail.

Since E and F both represent a fail, they just rolled them together.

These letter grading schemes are terrific. In Grade 4 I had perfect scores in Math and Spelling but got a C for effort in both. The teacher explained to my mother that she could only give out so many A’s and B’s and I really didn’t have to try very hard to score perfect marks. Never did understand why she would want me to put more effort into simple tasks.

In my country we have letter grades for the first cycle of school (FB – Very Good, B – Good, S – satisfactory, I – not satisfactory).

Then for the next cycle we have a number system from 1 to 10. This system is also used next in highschool.

Coincidentally a youtuber did an in-depth feature on exactly this question, enjoy:

P.s. should be noted I’m sure this guy did great research but I fact checked absolutely none of this and automatically took it all to be truth.

Im convinced this is just a TV/movie thing, both different school districts i went to used A-E systems and didn’t have an F grade.

Funny, my elementary school used “E” to denote “Excellent” as part of the grades for conduct. So, you’d get your letter grades of A-F for subjects/classes but then your conduct in those classes was graded either N-not satisfactory, S-satisfactory or E-excellent.
