eli5: In IT, what is the difference between rights and permissions?

I always thought they were the same, but apparently they are different. My IT instructor was trying to explain it, but it made no sense to me.

It’s a subtle difference, but rights are what you *have*; permissions are what you *need* to access a particular resource.

Think of rights like a key, and permissions like a lock. You can go down the hall trying your key in every door, but unless the lock is set to accept your key, you won’t get in.
