Eli5: In terms of electronic musical equipment, what is meant by phantom power?

I am an acoustic musician and regularly hear electric musicians talking about it but I am lost as to what is actually means?

Phantom power indicates that you’re delivering electrical power to a piece of equipment without seeing this power delivery. You don’t have to run a separate power supply cable or to insert a battery. The power is fed through the signal wire instead.
