[ELI5] Is Linux really ONE operating system?

Linux is often listed as parallel to OSes like macOS. But afaik Mac is also based off of Unix, so can I say Mac is a distro of unix? And then Mac would become parallel to linux distros like ubuntu and debian? Is a distro an OS of their own?

Yes, I think that’s fair to say. [MacOS is officially a UNIX operating system](https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/brand3678.htm), though it’s worth keeping in mind that what that really means is conformance to a baseline of specifications and that OSes build a *bunch* of stuff on top of that, including literally everything that makes MacOS distinctive.
