Most animals don’t have much of a brain, so normally your brain doesn’t trust itself to make conscious decisions about the important things. You have a lot of automatic or autonomous systems to manage important stuff like your hormones, your organs, immune responses, and the four Fs.
In the modern world, and with our very sophisticated brains, sometimes one or more of the automated systems can be maladaptive or otherwise get carried away.
