eli5: Motion of a helium balloon in a car

I heard that if a car accelerates from rest, a balloon would move forwards instead of backward. Why is this? Science says it’s because of density, but I don’t get their explanation. It also seems like it’s violating newton’s first law.

The balloon is a *void* of mass, the air in the car is more dense, so it has more inertia when the car accelerates, so when the car accelerates, the air, which you can’t see is resisting the acceleration more than the balloon pushing it out of the way.
