eli5: nespresso recyclability

i have a nespresso vertuo machine, wife got it for me for my birthday, my only issue is i keep the capsules in their black bag, wanting to be part of their recycling program, and everytime i open up the bag i see mold/fungi growing in the bag and i’m disgusted by it

how do nespresso deal with the “recycling” of the aluminium when the bag is so disgusting

FYI, i stay in south east asia, is it because of my climate?

They separate coffee grounds and other contamination from the aluminium, they talk about it on their [website.](https://www.nespresso.com/pro/au/en/recycling-process)

Aluminium and granular organic matter is pretty easy to separate.

1. They will chop up the canisters coarsely to spill the contents

2. The mix will be robustly agitated, possibly in some sort of mesh tumbler. The granules will fall through while the pieces of foil will remain in the tumbler.

3. They probably wash the canisters, again they can simply exploit the fact that the aluminium chunks won’t pass through a mesh.

4. The chunks are pressed into cubes along with any remaining contamination. The coffee is sent to make compost, the odd bit of foil doesn’t really matter since its basically inert and compost is just rotten down organic material so any mould doesn’t matter either.

5. The cubes are sent to a foundry. Melting them down will burn off a lot of contamination, and the remainder will float to the top of the molten metal as what is known as slag. The slag can be simply skimmed off the top.
