eli5: On the packaging of toilet cleaner and an article on mouthwash says that if ingested, do not induce vomitting, why is this? Wouldn’t it be better to get rid of as much of the harmful liquid as possible? What harm can happen if vomitting is induced?

It will do even more damage on the way up, than it already did on the way down.

The stomach is fairly durable to acid, so it is safer to try neutralize the acid in the stomach than trying to get it up again.

The substance can be so caustic to the tissues that passing it over the esauphagus a second time would be worse than dealing with it internally.

God only knows how you would do that.

The best way to deal with extremely basic substances (like those you mentioned) is to neutralize them ingesting their opposite, acids.

They will cause more damage being vomited up than they do in the stomach, which is a naturally acid environment.
