Eli5: People that donate to streamers, why?

385 viewsOtherTechnology

I don’t watch streamers, I don’t really understand the appeal but one of my biggest guilty pleasures is watching Wingsofredemption troll videos. This dude treats his viewers like absolute garbage and they still hand over money. Why? Am I missing something? Also shoutout Breaking Banquet!

Sometimes their name pops up on the stream for it, sometimes the streamers themselves will even say it out loud.

It makes people feel important and valid.

Some people are nice and have a good vibe so why not? If you have the money to spare and spend time watching their content, there is nothing wrong giving a few bucks to support the streamer. We continuously pay for entertainment.

The same reason anyone spends money on any form of entertainment they enjoy, to support the people providing said entertainment.

Its paying what they consider value for entertainment, plus they might get a small shout-out. Seems reasonable.

Same reason you pay for a movie ticket, they think the entertainment provided for them by the streamer is worth a monetary value. Except unlike a movie, you always have the option to enjoy the content for free.

Its interesting how suddenly people think an OPTIONAL price for entertainment is weird, when they were completely fine with compulsory payments?

Really only noticed two types of people that do it people who are borderline rich and simply don’t care or people who desire attention and have parasocial relationships with the said streamer.

But for wings it’s different he is a lulcow people donate to him to make fun of him, like the classic “liquid Richard” that still tilts him even though that name has earned him thousands.

I enjoy their content, and want them to be able to do more. If no one donates, how would they be able to afford to make more?

Do you not pay for things you enjoy?

Consider street performers, strippers, and medieval traveling theatres. Streamers are the digital version of them.

You come watch for free, and if you see something you like, drop a tip, or even pay to get a special reward from the performer.
