ELI5- Physical movie film

Earlier topic got me thinking- in the days before all movies became digital and big data files, how did they make what must have been hundreds (or thousands) of physical copies of the final cut to send out to the theaters?

An optical printer can copy a reel of film to a fresh roll- that’s just like pointing a film camera into a film projector.

Sometimes there would only be a handful of film prints made that just had to travel around to different theaters. Your local theater would have the film for a few days or so then it would move to somewhere else.
