Eli5 point if CVV

The three digit code in the back never made sense to me. I have heard it’s supposed to identify bank cards but I have seen a lot of cards with the same CVV. What do they do?

The idea of the cvc code on the back of the card is that since that specific value doesn’t appear anywhere in the magnetic stripe or chip data, someone who knows that information had to have physical possession of that card at some point in time.
