Eli5 Pyramid discoveries

How are there still new corridors and things being discovered in the pyramids. I’ve always assumed that we have the sonar/radar and remote control tech to see through or find the gaps but there are still new corridors and chambers being discovered.

Sonar need good contact with a consistent density from the scanner and where you scan. This is why the hospitals apply the gel to the skin. But the pyramids are made of stones stacked on top of each other. There are air gaps everywhere which reflect the sound instead of passing it through. So we are not able to get a nice clear picture of what is inside the pyramids with sonar. The image is all distorted and fuzzy. Radar and x-ray and other similar tools also have issues with the sandstone. They do not penetrate through it properly and will therefore not be able to show the empty spaces.

The technology used to scan the pyramids is quite amazing and fairly new. We place particle detectors under the pyramids, similar detectors as used in high energy particle accelerators. These are able to sense the particles coming from the upper atmosphere as it interacts with high energy interplanetary particles. These particles gets stopped by the sandstone in just the right amount and we can plot where the particles get through and where they gets stopped.

This technology have only been available for the last couple of decades. The rooms we have filmed now were discovered back then. There are documentaries on the History Channel discussing what these rooms are. What is new is that we have gotten the funding and done all the project planning and such in order to actually drill into them and send cameras into these chambers. Archeology is generally underfunded and is often stopped due to things like civil wars and other conflicts. And the chambers have been there for thousands of years so they do not go anywhere. The efforts are therefore focused more on archeological sites which is in danger of getting destroyed and rather spend more time planning these projects.
