eli5: sore throats

Question

When you are sick, why does your throat get sore? What changes in the throat so much that swallowing goes from something you do all the time without thinking about it to something agonizing?

For me it’s my tonsils swelling up massively and becoming tender and getting crushed together every time I swallow. Lymph nodes get big when you’re sick, I think that’s the reason
