eli5 Stars in space

Sorry if it’s been asked before but how come we can look up and see stars but when NASA releases photos taken in space it’s just a black abyss with no stars at all?

Was there something illuminated by direct sunlight in the same photo? Sunlight is ridiculously bright compared to the stars, so you need different camera settings.

If you’re trying to take a photo of the Earth(daylight side), and set the exposure to capture stars, the Earth will just be an overexposed white blob.

Stars are not very bright. Just try to take a photo with a person and stars during the night. Now take another picture with a flash. See? No stars anymore.

Try to use your phone camera to take a picture of stars. Better yet try to use your phone camera to take a picture of something lit on the ground against the night sky with stars visible.

Stars are small and very dim. Other objects of interest that we take pictures of in space are big and very bright. In order to properly expose the main object we’re interested in, the image simply doesn’t collect enough light from the stars for them to show up.

Also your premise isn’t even correct because there are countless readily available photos from space that show stars.
