eli5 Stars in space

Sorry if it’s been asked before but how come we can look up and see stars but when NASA releases photos taken in space it’s just a black abyss with no stars at all?

Stars are small and very dim. Other objects of interest that we take pictures of in space are big and very bright. In order to properly expose the main object we’re interested in, the image simply doesn’t collect enough light from the stars for them to show up.

Also your premise isn’t even correct because there are countless readily available photos from space that show stars.
