Eli5: stickers that prevent battery drain on packaged products.

It’d probably help if I knew the term but I don’t even know that. You see it on some toys or things like disposable vapes. You have to pull the tabs or stickers off for the product to operate. What’s it called and how’s it work?

There is non-conductive plastic film that physically disconnects the battery from the rest of the circuit. It sits between one of the terminals of the battery and its contact point. Modern devices are often always on at low power if they don’t have a mechanical switch that can be flipped. They are waiting for a button press to power up fully. Left in storage for months, they could drain the battery at this setting. Rechargeable cells usually shouldn’t be discharged completely or they are damaged.
