How would a telegraph get to the person it was intended for?

(Simplifying here)

Usually, you’d just send it over the line in general, and telegraph listeners would note everything, which is basically name (both target and sender) and date. If it was for an important name, they’d send someone for them, while if it were for a general average joe, you’d have to go check in if there were any to your name, and if there were, they give them to you.

This is why secret codes were important for military stuff: Encrypted messages would be heard by everyone, but only someone who knew how to decrypt could decrypt it.
