around 3:12, the guy talks about a “figure out the rest” section, where we should think of a magic/black box that just works. can someone explain what he means by that? ive been rewatching that part over and over and cant understand what the purpose of that is.

A black box is something that has inputs and outputs but the process from getting this output from said input is opaque. So we really only care about the the relationship from outputs to inputs, the rest is beyond our sight/understanding. This is the Control Systems definition, but I think that’s what he was getting at, just understanding the large picture, not knowing the internal workings.

A “black box” is a metaphor for something we can use but we don’t know/understand how it works.

For example, most people can drive a car, but few of them could explain how an internal combustion engine works.

Now imagine you take that example even further. Imagine that the engine itself is contained in a black box. You can’t even look inside to see how it works. But as long as it works you don’t need to know right?

Sometimes all you need to know is the outside details and it’s not necessary to know the inner details. That’s what this video appears to be telling you. For the purpose of its explanation you don’t need to figure out the details inside the box, at least not yet.
